Can you imagine beating yourself up that much? What's happening in this woman’s life that she feels so much pain and disappointment – about herself? Is it a factor of her actual circumstances, or of her expectations? It’s actually a combination of both, but overwhelmingly, it is her personal test of pass or fail. It is the criteria she uses to determine if she was a good person each day.

This woman, who we’ll call Beth, is a spectacular individual – smart, determined, loving, hard-working, thoughtful and beautiful inside and out. Seriously. She has raised five intelligent, confident and balanced children. She lives in a beautiful home, has a kind and loving husband and works diligently in a demanding, but rewarding job.

“I’m blessed with a wonderful husband, healthy kids, live in a great house and have a good part-time job, but I live with guilt. Some days I enjoy nothing. I’m just going through the motions to get it all done and it seems like it never does. I’m guilty when at work and things slide at home. I’m guilty at home when my job needs more from me. I can’t even get a hair cut without feeling guilty. ” Yikes! Sounds like this chick (let’s call her Susan) is trapped, doesn’t it? I mean, she can’t stop taking care of her kids, nor can she give up her job. And she sure as heck can’t create more hours in the day. Susan doesn’t have a choice but to keep living as she has. I feel like my time is being wasted. Help. What can I do?”? If a girl with this much going for her feels stuck, are the rest of us screwed? The fact is most of us who find ourselves in a less-than-ideal life situation actually do have our shit together. In the vast majority of situations, what’s required isn’t an overhaul of our lives. It’s usually one minor adjustment. A flicker continue »

Are simple pleasures the downfall of lasting happiness?

Drop-dead beautiful face, hair to die for, doting husband, a Toll Brother’s home and two model-material kids. Sound perfect? Pretty darn close. Ask this fabulous female what else she would need to be truly happy, she’ll tell you “If only I could drop these 20 pounds, then life would be complete.” So what’s so tough about that? She knows exactly what to do. The fact is, all of us know. Eat less. Move more. Do we need another diet book, unused gym membership or dusty piece of exercise equipment? Obviously not. At our finger tips, exists a plethora of resources on what it takes to lose weight. The information is there. So what’s the problem? Why do so many people find themselves unable to drop the poundage? continue »
